Place To Go - District Of Dungun General Information The town of Kuala Dungun used to be Terengganu's second busiest port. Kuala Dungun was at its best when iron ore from Bukit Besi were transported by railways to port. When the iron was considered uneconomic to mine, the industry was closed down, since then Dungun turns into a sleepy hollow. To date, Dungun is more known for its natural attractions such as the Chemerong Waterfall and also home to beautiful beaches.

BUKIT BESI / IRON-ORE MINES Iron-ore at Bukit Besi was first discovered by a team of Japanese geologists in 1919 and in 1923, Kuhara Mining Company secured the mining rights. The company employed 130 Japanese and more than 3000 locals to work the mine. During World War II, the mining ceased operations. It was taken over by British company after the war It

THE BIGGEST CENGAL TREE The forest reserves of Terengganu are mostly untouched tropical rainforests rich with flora and fauna. In the vast Pasir Raja Forest Reserve, near the borders of Taman Negara, stands the world's largest Cengal Tree. Cengal trees are mostly used for building purposes due to its remarkable quality and durability.
This particular Cengal tree however is verified by the Malaysian Book of Records as the largest in the world. This 1300-year old tree towers at 65m and its diameter measures up to 16.75m. The trek reaching the tree is quite challenging.
