AGRO-TOURISM

City dwellers should visit farms or plantations and witness firsthand how rubber tapping is done. Agro-tourism is very popular with city dwellers. Plantations, farms, husbandries, herb and spice, padi fields, harvesting, oil palm and rubber processing, aquaculture and apiary have been successfully packaged as tourist attractions.

It is a shame not to share the state’s many agricultural wonders. Johor has the world’s largest arowana farm, the second largest orchid farm and a rare species of a mixed breed of wild ox and domesticated cow known as selembu. The state is proud to have produced a hybrid pineapple known as Josapine. There are herb and spice farms, a lowland tea plantation, apiaries, ostrich farms, tropical orchards, dairy farms, “kelong” aquaculture, arapaima fish centre and even a veterinary museum, not to mention numerous small-scale agricultural industries are well worth a visit.

HOMESTAY

The homestay programme is a unique package offering not only accommodation and meals. Guests are sometimes divided into groups and each group is assigned to a village family. This is a great way to interact with locals to understand their culture and customs.

A tour of the village houses and farms surrounding the areas will allow the guests to see the kind of cash crops, numerous herbs and agricultural food grown by the farmers. In the evening guests will be entertained by local cultural troupes (prior arrangement has to be made with the headman of the village). For those who love fishing, this can be arranged with the local fishermen who know where to get the best catch.
