 Johor General Information

 

Johor, located at the Southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, is 'The Southern Gateway to Malaysia'. The state is also located at the southernmost tip of the Asian continent. It is bordered by the Straits of Malacca, the South China Sea

and the Johor Straits.

 

There is every reason to visit Johor. It is a land of plenty excitement with fascinating history and interesting places.  Johor has thousand of species of plants and forest covering over 30% of the state. On the coasts, blue water fills the horizon and the frothy waves stir up the fine sand.  There are protected areas reserved entirely for wildlife protection, 4 National Parks, 7 recreational forests and an increasingly protected coastline are just a few areas where one can come in contact with nature. Flora and fauna abound in these gazette areas where nature thrives without check. Rolling hills and countryside dotted with little towns and villages with different touches of scent form a complex mosaic.

 

Every land has its past. Johor is no exception. History can be seen in its mosques, the ancient fort and tombstones which illustrate the role of the Johor kingdom in the 17th century. The imposing State Secretariat building was designed by experts from oversea.  One of the favourite activities is shopping.  From internationally famous designer merchandise wares, to local talent, from fabulous malls to colourful market stalls, selling fresh produce, specialty shops and craft shops; you’re sure to find something to delight you.

 

Johor is a land of diverse and distinct cultures, With many different ethnic groups; many people to get to know! So many chances to see the diversity which marks the landscape mirrored in their way of life.

CULTURE
 

Visitors to Johor are often amazed by the cultural diversity they encounter. Cultural expressions can take many other forms - such as dresses, customs, beliefs, ceremonies, celebrations, festivals, dances, games and pastimes.

 

 

Kuda Kepang and Zapin present the best of the traditional Malay dances in Johor. ‘Kuda Kepang’ a dance performed in rich costumes and used ‘mengkuang” (a kind of pine) woven horses. The dance denotes warriors on horses in battle, it slowly gains momentum until it becomes more vigorous towards the climax when victory is celebrated.

 

Ghazal and Barongan are the backbone of traditional Malay music. Ghazal, a word of Arabic origin, probably came from the court of Johor-Riau and was introduced to mainland Johor notably during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar. It is a small group of musicians playing both traditional and modern instruments. Performance is normally played in private houses using melodies and lyrics in the form of poem. The traditional Chinese dances are expressed by the Lion Dance and Dragon Dance.

 

The main festivals observed by the three main races of Johor are:

  • Malays or Muslim : Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, Hari Raya Aidil Adha, Awal Muharam, Birthday of Prophet Muhammad

  • Chinese : Lunar New Year (Xin Nian), Chap Goh Mei, Dumpling Festival (Tuan Wu), Festival of Hungry Ghosts (Meng Lan), Mooncake Festival (Chong Chiew) and Winter Festival (Ko Tong)

  • Hindus : Deepavali and Thaipusam.

 

Annually, the Chinese in Johor Bahru celebrate Chingay by taking the deities of the five main dialects for a procession. The Buddhists celebrate Wesak Day and the Christians Christmas.
