Visitors will be taken in by the lush green of tropical rainforests, the misty mountains, the serenity of the rural villages and the endless spread of the padi fields. Kedah is one of the best destination for those seeking retreat from urban living as its pristine environment is still intact despite the development taking place in the state.

 

Take a boat ride and explore the vast lake or just enjoy the sun. Play golf at one of the best designed golf course around. Also witness the honey gathering process conducted by local bee handlers. Watch how the experts retrieve honey from the 30 metres high Tualang tree in the wilderness of Pedu jungle. This activity is being held once a year i.e. in the month of February. Look out for the flora and fauna.

ULU MUDA ECO-PARK
 

This unspoilt 105,000 hectare natural heritage is accessible by road about 95km from Alor Star and 140km from Penang. The park is home to the following exciting species: mammals - 109: birds - 74; reptiles - 54; amphibian - 42 ; and fish - 33, some of which are unique to this rainforest. With the service of highly experienced guide, the journey takes on a more educational and rewarding thrill.

 
 

 

SEDIM TREE TOP WALK

Sungai Sedim River

 

The 950m-long tree top walk at the Sedim River Recreation Park is the longest canopy walk in the world.

 

Built within the lowlands of Gunung Inas Forest Reserve, the tree top walk is an ecotourism attraction for nature lovers and provides unique and spectacular views of the tropical rainforest. The admission cost is RM10.00 for adults and RM6.00 for children. Children below 7 years old enter free of charge. Picnicking is also a popular family activity here as the recreational park has basic infrastructure and facilities such as chalets, changing rooms, public toilets and food stalls.

 

Those who are more adventurous can try white water rafting along Sungai Sedim which offers 17km of non-stop rapids graded between one and four. Kayaking and canoeing activities can also be arranged. The less adventurous ones can opt to go bird watching.

 

Visitors can choose to stay at Bintang Sedim Villa which offers dormitory accommodation. They can accommodate up to 120 visitors at any one time. The town of Kulim, 30km away, also offers basic to 2-star accommodation.

 

Getting There

If you’re planning to visit Sedim River Recreation park by road, from Kuala Lumpur, take the North South Highway (PLUS) and exit at Seberang Jaya into the Butterworth - Kulim Expressway (BKE). Proceed towards Kulim Hi-Tech Park and Karangan town.

 
 
GUNUNG JERAI
 

 

At 200 m above sea level, Kedah Peak, as it was previously known, is a majestic limestone hill, covered by lush greenery offering spectacular views of the valley below of a vast expanse of relaxingly cool green padi fields. At the peak, you can find the forestry museum where many species of wood from the Gunung Jerai forest are displayed. Perfect for jungle trekking, bird watching and camping.

 
 
SUNGAI MERBOK (MERBOK RIVER)
 

 

Sungai Merbok was once an important thoroughfare for traders stopping over at the Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley) trading port during the latter's golden era from the 5th until the 13th centuries. In fact traders from China, India and the Middle East that had converged the Lembah Bujang port knew Kedah then as the Golden Peninsula.

 

Sungai Merbok has truly left behind many exciting historical footprints that should be explored and researched to unearth its glorious heydays. Along the Sungai Merbok, the mangrove forest form a special attraction where 30 different species of mangrove vegetation exclusively found here. The 4,114 hectare forest is one of the largest mangrove forest reserves in Malaysia. There are also 80 different species of rare birds as well as fireflies that could be found along its river banks.

 
 
PEDU LAKE
 

 

Accessible by road about 45km from Kuala Nerang and 95km from Alor Star, this prime eco tourist retreat of natural rainforest surroundings boasts wide spectrum of flora and fauna. Even the chalets here are carefully blended in to take advantage of the serene and cool environment. Once a year in February, there is an opportunity to see how bee hunter gather wild honey. Other activities available here are fishing, jungle trekking, bird watching and adventure activities.
