This sanctuary has the distinction of being the oldest as well as the only permanent forest reserve in the heart of the city. Beginning at the slopes of KL Tower, the lowland dipterocarp forest stretches over 10.5 hectares and is home to a diversity of inhabitants. A 100- year-old Jelutong tree (Dyera Consulata) adds to the appeal here. Marvel at the lush foliage in a 70-metre boardwalk or join a guided tour to take a closer look at the trees, bamboos, herbs and climbers. Visitors can choose from three different trails. Look out for exotic birds, butterflies, squirrels and monkeys. Gazetted as a forest reserve in 1906, Bukit Nonas is the oldest such reserve in Malaysia. Bukit Nonos was also gazetted as a wildlife reserve and bird sanctuary. In 1950, a central, pristine section of about five hectores was gazetted as a virgin jungle reserve. A good starting point to exolore the forest reserve is the educational Forest Information Centre in Jolan Raja Chulan. From there, a vigorous climb up a well-maintained, paved pathway leads into the central area of the reserve where there is on access gate into the grounds of Kuala Lumpur Tower. Nature lovers come to observe the sanctuary’s wild inhabitants along trie more than 660 metres of unpaved forest trails. The reserve is under the purview of the Department of Forestry. KLTower organises several activities here under the ‘Forest In The City’ package, including guided forest walks and night walks.
