Located near the Tanjung Kubong Tunnel. This Birds Park shows a large variety of tropical birds front around the region such as hornbills, kingfishers, sharmas, mynas, herons and maybe even ostriches and peacocks.
Situated at Layang-L.ayangan. This beautifully landscaped park was built as a memorial and renunciation of the horrors of war. A huge man-made mound is the focal point and there is a plague signifying the renunciation of war.
Also at Layang-Layangan. This is where the 37th Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9* Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9th September 1945 which led to the end of WWll in Borneo. It is also in this area that South East Asia’s first war crime trials were conducted.
University Malaysia Sabah International Campus located at the Kiamsam area. It is known for its special focus on multimedia and offshore finance studies. It is the only university on the island.
The three islands of Rusukan Kecil, Rusukan Bestir and Kuraman make up this Park. Its wide sandy beaches are perfect for picnic and sun bathing. As it is close to the wreck-dive sites, many divers use it as their base. Rusukan Bestir still has dense forest, but is nice for picnicking, swimming and snorkelling. Rusukan Kecil in its unspoilt state is suitable for camping. An atoll in the middle of the marine park has many snake sheltering there.
WATER VILLAGE
Kampung Air
There are two main water villages namely Kampung Bebuloh and Kampung Patau-Patau. The residents are mainly the Brunei Malay. The wooden houses are built on stilts over water and are connected to each other by numerous wooden walkways. Almost every house has its own boat. The houses can be quite large and they all have a cool verandah in front. Some are very eye-catching with pots of brightly colored bougainvillea and orchid plants. The village consists of large communities with shops, mosques and other facilities.
The heart of Bandar Labuan, formally known as Victoria town. Flags of all the Malaysian states flutter beside the town Padang. Nearby are the four historical flame of the forest” trees. Many stone plaques recall the historical events of Labuan throughout the years.
The Financial Park is the most impressive building in Labuan. This l7-storey complex with a built-up area of one million square feet stands as a landmark for the island’s status as an International Offshore Financial Center. Within this complex are office blocks, condominiums and shopping arcades. It houses the Labuan Convention Hall, an ultra modern facility which can seat 1,500 people. The Financial Park provides an integrated working and living environment with facilities and services like broadband telecommunication facilities for offshore banking and other business activities.
Situated at Jalan Tanjung Batu. 3,905 graves of soldiers mostly Australians and British lie here. A memorial service is held on the nearest Sunday to 11th of November This memorial is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The An’Nur Jamek Mosque, featuring futuristic architecture, is the pride of l.ashuan’s Muslims and symbolises the progressive spirit of the people of Lahuan.
Situated at Tanjung Kubong, this 106 feet high structure is Labuan’s most well-known landmark. It was built in the 1800s. The actual purpose of the chimney is still a mystery but many believe it served as a ventilation shaft. Recent archaeological study found no traces of smokes to suggest its use as a chimney. Various hypothesis has been put forward to its actual use and purpose.
This is the site of the coal-mining industry from 1847 till 1911. It has left many tunnels and deep wells that are believed to he connected underground. The area beckons to the adventurous and the curious.
