A penghulu (village headman) will greet you in his warm and customary style before introducing you to your foster family. Elders are usually introduced first, followed by other family members. While enjoying your drink, the head of the household will inquire into your needs, and at the same time brief you on what you an expect and the various activities that have been lined up for your stay in his kampung. After being shown to your room, you will be taken on a short tour of the house. Despite a modern lifestyle, rural traditions and etiquette remain preserved. You will be pleasantly surprised by the hospitality and politeness of the kampung folk, and their respect for their elders. |

The type of house that you will live in during your Homestay is most likely the traditional Malay house., which is made of timber and raised on stilts. It is basically a post and lintel structure with wooden or bamboo walls and a thatched roof. Many windows line the walls and provide good ventilation. | | | | | | A true experience of Malaysian culture is incomplete without a taste of traditional cuisine. | Malaysian cuisine is influenced by variety of ethnic groups, mainly Malay, Chinese and Indian. Each has a wide variety of gastronomic delights. When it comes to Malay cuisine, there are different specialties from each state. For example, the stats bordering Thailand share common affinity for spicy food. Two famous breakfast specials that you will enjoy during your Homestay are roti canai and nasi lemak. Roti canai is a round, flat bread made from wheat flour and is cooked on a hot plate. It is usually eaten with lentil or meat curry. Nasi lemak is rice cooked in coconut milk. It is served with ikan bilis (anchovies), sambal (chili paste), boiled egg, fried peanuts and slices of cucumber. Popular Malaysian lunch and dinner dishes include nasi kandar and mee goreng. The former is famous in Penang, but can be found nationwide. It is fragrant rice, served with fish or meat curry and a variety of gravy.
