 Homestay Programme Village Pastimes

Visitors can indulge in fun village pastimes, which range from simple traditional games to the energetic sepak takraw.

Most villagers enjoy congkak - a game played on an elongated board with two rows of holes carved into it.  Marbles or seeds are used as tokens.  The village children would only be too happy to teach a curious visitor the simple rules of this addictive game.

Malaysia is renowned for its colourful giant kites.  Magnificent in size and traditional in design, a wau is a good representation of the artistic skills that coastal villagers possess.  Painstakingly crafted, it has floral designs pasted on it an is embellished with paper tassels.  Homestay kampungs located in the east coast states of Terengganu and Kelantan are good locations to witness them in action.

Wau-making is a specialised skill that has been handed down for generations and villagers will gladly share their wau-flying skills wit visitors. A recreational game, gasing or top spinning is a pastime that is popular among the paddy-planting community after the harvest. The gasing is carved out of tropical hardwood into a disc, with a metal spike through its apex.  Gasings are huge and can reach weights of up to seven kilogram's.  The cord, made of rope, is neatly wrapped around the top of the gasing, which is launched with great force onto a landing pas.  It is then immediately scooped up with a thin wooden bat and transferred to a metal receptacle to determine which top can spin the longest.

Local experts are known to be able to spin their gasings for hours, delighting audience with their skill and poise.  They will demonstrate some techniques and guide visitors on how to play the game.
