Shop to your heart’s content at the numerous modern shopping complexes, retail outlets, handicraft stores, flea markets and sidewalk bazaars in the city. Penang is a shopper’s paradise, with hundreds of retail establishments located in and around the city. The main shopping areas are concentrated in lalan Penang, Lebuh Campbell, Lehuh Kapitan Keling, Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Pantai. The highly versatile batik fabric is available as individually designed pieces or as clothing, table cloths, napkins and furnishings. These items are sold at factories in Teluk Bahang and in souvenir shops at Batu Ferringhi. They are also available at specialist shops in Penang Road and in most department stores and shopping complexes. Batik paintings can also he found in galleries along Jalan Penang, Lebuh Leith and Batu Ferringhi. If you are searching for fine jewellery, then Lebuh Campbell and Lebuh Kapitan Keling are the places to go. Popular shopping complexes include Gurney Plaza, Prangin Mall, Island Plaza and Midlands One-stop Shopping Centre. Penang is also a paradise for antique lovers in search of rare bargains. The shops along Rope Walk (Jalan Pintal Tali) and the Lorong Kulit flea market offer a wide range of antique items. Bargaining is still very much a part of life here, so don’t be afraid to haggle over prices or ask for a discount. Queensbay Mall This shopping complex opened on 1 December 2006 and is touted as the largest and longest shopping mall on Penang Island. It is positioned as a “Family Lifestyle Mall’ of international standard catering to households who are looking for good value for money and the latest in designs and styles. Queensbay Mall, with five levels of retail and eight levels of parking, has Jusco as its anchor tenant, 1 7 junior anchors and more than 500 retail merchants. Its tenants include Borders, Guess, Dorothy Perkins, Topshop, Starbucks, Giordano, Sub, Popular Bookstore, Chicken Rice Shop and GNC. The integrated entertainment zone on the third floor provides a wide range of entertainment and leisure attractions ranging from the Golden Screen Cinema multiplex to an ice skating ring. Chowraasta Market The Chowrasta Market in downtown George Town, Penang, is a well-stocked bazaar offering unbeatable prices. Visit the market to browse through the various items such as bean paste biscuits and preserved nutmeg. These made in Penang products are cheaper there as bargaining is allowed and even encouraged. Some second-hand bookstores are on the first floor of the building. They are all piled high with books and magazines. The original Chowrasta Market was built in 1890 by the George Town municipality. The front portion facing Penang Road was rebuilt in 1920 and has remained virtually unchanged until 1981 when a new market was built in its place. In Urdu, Chowrasta means four cross roads. In the early days, more than three-quarters of the stall holders were Indian Muslims from south India. Batu Ferringhi Sidewalk Bazaar After sunset, the flaw Ferringhi sidewalk transforms into a bazaar where traders from all over the island set up their stalls. Like the night market, everything from food, clothing, batik, watches, pens and fashion accessories are sold here and bargaining is the order of the day. The stalls operates from 6.00pm KOMTAR The biggest shopping landmark is KOMTAR (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak) at Jalan Penang. Featuring a geodesic dome which serves as a multipurpose hall, the 65-storey complex contains offices, department stores and restaurants. The cameras, watches, pens, cosmetics and electrical items are amongst the cheapest in Malaysia. There is also a revolving restaurant at the top which provides a panoramic view of the island and mainland. |
