HOW TO GET THERE

 

Often called the ‘Land Below The Wind’ because it lies below the typhoon belt, Sabah occupies the eastern part of North Borneo and is East Malaysia’s second largest state with an area of 74,500sq km. Sabah has the South China Sea on the west and the Sulu and Celebes seas on the east and a coastline of some 1,440km. Sabah is mountainous with lush tropical rainforests and i t s population of nearly two million i s made up of 3 2 colourful ethnic communities. Kota Kinabalu, the capital, is a fertile lowland plain where most commercial and administrative activity is concentrated. It is the eastern gateway to Malaysia with direct air links to Brunei, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Kota Kinabalu, the state capital, is the modern gateway to the rest of Sabah. Direct flights between KK (the name by which Kota Kinabalu is fondly called) and the regional capitals of Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Kaoshiung, Hong Kong, Taipei, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Shanghai in China, Sydney, Manila, Manado & Balikpapan Indonesia, Brunei, make Sabah easily accessible to travellers everywhere.

 
 

 
GETTING AROUND
 

BY ROAD

There is an excellent road system linking the principal cities. Express buses link major towns while mini-buses are used for shorter distances and within town areas. Shared taxis, mini-buses, ordinary buses and boats are the means of getting around.

 

BY AIR

For journeys to towns further away, MAS operates daily flights to Labuan, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau.

 

BY RAIL

There is a rail line from Beaufort and Tenom in the south but rail transport is otherwise little developed.

 

BY RIVERS

In the interior regions, rivers form the ‘roads’, linking riverine communities and villages with travel by sampans (small boats) or longboats.
