Penang has had a long association with the sea, as it has been an important trading port for centuries.  This strategically located island offers a safe haven for yachters in a culturally fascinating part

of the country.

The states includes the island of Penang as well as the mainland areas around Butterworth.  The island is connected to the mainland via a bridge and vehicular and passenger ferries.

The historic heart of the island is known as Georgetown and here the architecture is an eclectic mix of Indian, Malay, Chinese, European and Arabic styles.  The narrow streets, where old trades are still practiced and the constantly lively streetscape combine to ensure that any visit here will be memorable.

They have limited number of berths on pontoons and can offer facilities for structural and mechanical boat repairs in the water and on their slipways.  They can also provide fuel and water supplies.  The junk moorage is the closest to Georgetown but is subject to wash and disturbance from commercial traffic in this busy port.  It is also exposed to the strong northeasterly winds.  A more tranquil anchorage is situated further south between Jerejak Island and the main island, where some moorings are available.

While there is a small jetty for landing by tender, there are no organised shore facilities here.  Further north, the Marine Department and the Marine Police have modern bases just south of the expansive Penang Bridge. Boats can anchor here and the land by prior arrangement with the authorities.  Keelboats need to approach this anchorage by passing inside Jerejak Island.
