THE LAND BELOW THE WIND Sabah, known as the 'Land Below the Wind', indicates just how important the monsoon winds are in and around Sabah. For centuries seafarers sought refuge here from the monsoon winds. The main ports of call for yachters are Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kudat and Kota Kinabalu. |

 | Sabah is recognised for its rich natural features and a destination for eco and adventure tourism. Malaysia's highest peak, Mount Kinabalu at 4,101m, is 'conquered, each year by many fit adventurers. The lowland forests are home to a myriad of animals including Orang Utans and Proboscis Monkeys both found along the mighty Kinabatangan River among others. Sipadan Island off the northeast coast is considered one of the world's best dive sites. Turtles emerge each night to lay eggs in the soft sands of Turtle Island off Sandakan. Borneo's only train from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom is popular with train lovers as is the old steam train of the North Borneo Railway that operates to Papar. |

SARAWAK - ADVENTURES IN NATURE The modern city of Kuching on the Sarawak River is the gateway to the state. The open concept riverfront is the city's main feature but there are many other attractions like the State Museum, historic buildings and shops along the Main Bazaar brimming with ethnic handicrafts. |

The Sarawak Cultural Village near the seaside settlement of Damai provides a wonderful introduction to Sarawak's various ethnic groups. The main yachting sports are Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching. Sarawak is known for its natural areas protected as national parks, its vast interior and several meandering rivers. |

 | Kuching The bridge at Pending on the Sarawak River near Kuching is as far as most yachts can sail as the bridge here is too low for most to proceed upstream to Kuching. There are 80 berths with electricity and water. Bako National park near the mouth of the Sarawak River offers safe moorages and is a place to discover fascinating plants and animals. LABUAN The duty-free island of Labuan off the southwest Sabah coast is a recognised place for yachters to moor. The Labuan Marina Centre - Waterfront Labuan may re-open its marina to offer services to passing yachts. |
